Statement
A Fuku-Daruma traditionally receives one painted eye when a wish is made and the other when it is fulfilled. For this work, wooden daruma figures are made with the eyes omitted from their form, retaining gouges, scratches and fractures. The series also includes figures whose left and right halves are separated by resin.
Marks made by the artist and naturally occurring cracks remain on the same wooden daruma. The work brings together a future we hope for and material changes that our hopes alone cannot determine. Despite the marks and separations, a recognisable daruma form remains.
The work grows out of a fear of losing people and things that matter to me. Faced with an altered form, what do we feel has been lost, and what do we recognise as still present?
