Statement

Ginkgo wood is carved with ears that suggest a rabbit and an opening through the centre of its face. The outline evokes a rabbit, but looking for its face draws attention to the central opening. A familiar image overlaps with the wooden form before us.

The Moon’s dark regions were once thought to be seas of water and named accordingly. Though now understood as plains of solidified lava, they retain the name. As people find a rabbit in the Moon’s dark patterns, we bring familiar images and meanings to visible forms.

Memory does not preserve every aspect of an experience unchanged. Later knowledge and interpretations can enter what we recall. Through a wooden form that suggests a rabbit, the work questions the relationship between visible forms and the memories and knowledge we bring to them.
