Statement
The wooden vessel is coated with black lacquer, while the wood remains exposed in a depression at the front. This depression is carved with reference to maeose, a shallow indentation on the front of a tea bowl. A form made as part of the vessel’s design also evokes its future chipping or decay.
The depression that completes the vessel suggests a future in which it can no longer retain its finished shape. The fear of losing something precious can arise while it is still with us. By anticipating future loss in the vessel’s present form, the work draws attention to familiar objects and people who are still here with us. It asks how we relate, in the present, to what we may one day lose.
