Statement

A dismantled cassette tape is sealed in resin cast in the form of an eyeless daruma. Its reels and unwound tape remain visible inside, but cannot be taken out of the resin and played as they are. Tape made to record sound remains in a state that cannot be played.

A Fuku-Daruma traditionally receives one painted eye when a wish is made and the other when it is fulfilled. A cassette tape made to record past sound is placed inside a daruma form associated with wishes for the future. Both have been removed from their customary uses.

Keeping an object is not the same as being able to reach the past through it. The work brings attention to the distance between an object before us and the time we want to recover from it. Does the fact that something remains mean that nothing has been lost?
